The US has cancelled its military exercises with China in a $716 billion defence bill signed by President Trump yesterday. The spending package for next year, which is up from $700 billion, also cleared the way for retaliatory cyberattacks and approved a 12th aircraft carrier and 13 new warships. It reflects the determination of the US to resist the expansion of Chinese military activity in cyberspace and around disputed islands in the South China Sea, where Beijing is believed to have deployed cruise missiles. The largest military expenditure package since $721 billion was spent in 2010 also called for more arms sales to, and joint military exercises with, Taiwan, which is seen as a renegade province by Beijing.
