I was on a solo trip because my friend Lisa injured herself stumbling on a random rock on the street. After consulting with my Beijing friend, I decided Summer Palace would be my destination of the day. I was told that it is the annual summer retreat for Empress Dowager Cixi. After learning so much about her in my good ole days in middle school, I was eager to find out what it is about the palace that fascinated Empress Dowager Cixi.
