HKong plans to mark 20yrs of Beijing rule
published: 2017-04-11 12:08:16 (6 Apr 2017) Hong Kong’s Chief Secretary on Thursday hailed the “One Country, Two Systems” constitutional principle under which the former British colony retains a separate economic, legal and political system from the communist-governed Chinese mainland until 2047. Matthew Cheung was speaking at a news conference that was held to announce the celebration plans to mark the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong being made a special administrative region of China. Cheung announced that a budget of 640 million HK dollars (82 million US dollars) has been set aside for activities related to the 20th anniversary celebrations that will take place later this year. He also stated that the Hong Kong government will be promoting closer economic ties with mainland China and the global community as a whole.
The former British colony returned to China on 1 July 1997.
