Guangzhou stumble in CBA season opener with huge loss to Qingdao

In the last of 10 season-opening games to tip off the new campaign in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), the Guangzhou Loong Lions suffered a tough 109-80 loss to Qingdao Eagles on the road.

Star guard Guo Ailun, a recent addition for Guangzhou, sat out the contest, leaving the Loong Lions without one of their key offensive weapons. His absence was felt keenly, as only three players managed to score in double-digits for the visitors.

Qingdao seized the momentum early, establishing a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looking back. The hosts showcased a well-rounded team performance, characterized by fluid ball movement and teamwork. Five players reached double figures, with Wang Ruizhe leading the charge with an impressive 26 points.

The Eagles effectively utilized Yang Hansen’s dominance in the paint, while also capitalizing on the squad’s perimeter shooting to drain 13 three-pointers, a statistic that proved too challenging for Guangzhou’s defense.

Davion Warren did his best to carry the load for the Loong Lions, contributing 22 points, but ultimately his teammates struggled to provide him with much support. The lack of depth and offensive spark was evident, particularly in the absence of Guo, and the visiting side went on to succumb by 29 points.
