Beijing concerned about Korean Peninsula situation

published: 2017-03-22 11:11:20 (17 Mar 2017) A spokeswoman for China’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the country was “concerned” about instability in the Korean Peninsula, as it was on “the doorstep of China.” Hua Chunying told journalists in Beijing that China had “every reason to play a constructive role to maintain peace and stability of the peninsula.” She added that the Six-Party Talks was an effective platform to resolve the peninsular issue. Her remarks were made after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said during his Asia tour that it may be necessary to take pre-emptive military action against North Korea if the threat from its weapons programme reaches a level “that we believe requires action.”

Tillerson spoke at a news conference in Seoul after visiting the heavily militarised border with North Korea on Friday.
