Hwang Kyo-ahn said he would continue to monitor China’s actions as the system is installed, prepare countermeasures if necessary and seek to reinforce communications with Beijing. He reiterated Seoul’s position that the missile defense system is being installed to protect the country and its people from North Korea’s missile threats… and does not target any third country. China has long objected to the THAAD system, saying it hurts its strategic interests.

Hwang also touched upon the murder of the North Korean leader’s half brother Kim Jong-nam, reiterating that South Korea will continue to work with Malaysia while ensuring the safety of high-profile North Korean defectors.
