Before traveling to Beijing, I was repeatedly told that the air pollution is very severe and it’s advised to wear a mask at all time. The whole time during the flight, I was anxious to find out whether it’s true because I had forgotten to bring masks with me. I have to admit the indifference between the air in Taipei and Beijing surprised me. I thought people were mistaken for commenting on air pollution in Beijing so negatively. Until I left my friend’s suburban neighborhood and took the metro into the city center, there is no doubt in my mind now that it would be advised to pack a mask with you visiting Beijing.
